Building the engine behind ASICS' EMEA growth
ASICS EMEA was growing at double digits year on year, aiming for $1B in regional revenue within a group selling about €2.4B worldwide with the ambition to reach $4B, and needed to professionalize and accelerate how it executed its strategy. Reporting to the COO, I built and led a new function, the Strategic PMO, responsible for analyzing, prioritizing and delivering strategic and transformation projects: more than 50 in total, including ASICS' first-ever e-commerce, new European flagship stores, ERP, product lifecycle management, go-to-market and B2B webshops. I then led Corporate Strategy for the region as strategic advisor to the EMEA CEO, owning the strategic planning process, the mid- and long-term growth strategy and business transformation across EMEA.

The company
A Japanese running specialist scaling up in EMEA
- Europe sales of about €612M in FY2011/12, up almost 10%.
- Shifting from a globally led structure and strategy to a regional model (EMEA, USA, LATAM, Asia-Pacific and Emerging Markets).
- Taking over distributors and acquiring specialist sports brands, starting with Swedish outdoor brand Haglöfs, acquired for about $130M.
- Very limited direct-to-consumer sales (own stores and online): no own e-commerce, with online sales only through retailers such as Amazon and eBay.
A multichannel, multi-category brand on course for $1B in the region
- EMEA sales up 13% in 2014, with double-digit growth in seven markets.
- Own retail sales, physical and digital, up 37%.
- On track to pass $1B in sales, the goal of its five-year plan.
- Fully operational as one of ASICS' five regions worldwide.
My scope & impact
Define a growth plan and turn it into delivered projects
ASICS EMEA was running a long list of transformation projects in parallel, each with its own owner and timeline, and no single view of what mattered most. Most were running over time and over budget, without clear goals or a link to the company strategy. My job was to build that missing capability: the Strategic PMO gave leadership one portfolio, one set of priorities and one way of delivering. Two years later, I moved into corporate strategy, working with the CEO, CFO and CCO on where the next phase of growth would come from.
Best-performing region worldwide, excelling in execution
- Launched ASICS' first-ever e-commerce and, with the retail team, accelerated store openings, moving the brand into direct-to-consumer.
- 96% of strategic initiatives delivered on time and on budget, with 25+ delivered every year.
- Cross-territory, cross-category project governance and a new strategic planning process in place across the region.
- Supported the integration of Haglöfs into ASICS EMEA.
What I led

ASICS' first Strategic PMO
Built ASICS' first Strategic PMO from scratch, reporting to the EMEA COO: one governance model, one portfolio, one budget and one set of priorities, with a center of excellence in project & program management and business intelligence, delivering 96% of strategic initiatives on time and on budget.

ASICS' first-ever e-commerce
Launched ASICS' first-ever direct-to-consumer online store in Europe, moving the brand beyond third-party marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay and laying the foundations of its digital business.

Flagship store expansion in Europe
Supported the expansion and launch of flagship stores in Europe, implementing ERP, POS and CRM systems across all new stores, including the new Amsterdam concept.

Integrating Haglöfs
Supported the integration of Swedish outdoor brand Haglöfs, acquired for about $130M, bringing its systems and operations into ASICS EMEA across every function.

Five-year EMEA Growth Strategy
Led the planning and execution of ASICS' five-year EMEA growth strategy, targeting $1B in sales, +13% CAGR and +4pp operating margin by 2016, advising the CEO on growth, capital allocation, partnerships and acquisitions.

Beyond running: new categories
Within the group's ASICS Growth Plan 2015, worked with the CFO and CCO on growth beyond running: Onitsuka Tiger and sports lifestyle, outdoor, apparel, strategic partnerships and international expansion.
